Shahar Peer def Sabine Lisicki 6-4 7-6 (4)

Cincy First Round Shocker:
Shahar Peer def Sabine Lisicki 6-4 7-6 (4)

It seems like Shahar Peer is getting back to the form that almost took her into the top 10. Peer will face Victoria Azarenka in the second round. Read on for my analysis of the match.

Although I expected Lisicki to take this match in two, Peer played a great match. She is a counterpuncher who relies on her opponent to lose most of the points, and Lisicki hit 49 unforced errors. Peer was able to break Lisicki six times during the match - three times in each set.

The first set was pretty close, but the second set was quite lopsided. Lisicki wasn't able to put her game together, and Peer raced to a 5-0 lead. However, Peer got tight and Lisicki started to take a little off her shots. Lisicki then broke Peer three times and got up to a 6-5 lead. However, Peer was able to push the set to a tiebreak and won the tiebreak 7-4.

If Lisicki wants to get farther, she needs to tone down her shots a bit. She is an explosive player, but she is quite streaky. If her shots aren't going in, she needs to adjust her style of play and hit with a little less power and a little more margin. When she played like that today, she was still hitting the ball hard, but she got better results since she hit fewer unforced errors. She needs to learn from this match because she has the ability to be a consistent top 15 player when she doesn't spray the ball everywhere.

  1. I love Sabine, but can she learn the lesson?
