Week In Review II

Throughout the week, we were treated to some great tennis. Because of that, I spent most of my time watching tennis instead of writing about it. That said, I'm still writing this recap of the week. Read on to see what happened this week and to see my thoughts on Serena Williams's comeback.

During this week, WTA fans were treated to two events, an international event at Washington DC and a premier event at Stanford. The winners of these two events were Nadia Petrova and Serena Williams respectively.

Nadia Petrova won her 10th career title at the Citi Open.
Nadia Petrova only lost one set in her run to the championship at the Citi Open. She played with some of the flair that got her to number three in the world. If she continues with this form, she should have a chance at getting back to the top 20 in the world by the end of the year. She may also qualify for the YEC at Bali. (International Series YEC)

However, Serena Williams had the performance of the week. She also lost one set en route to the championships at the Bank of the West Classic at Stanford. In her final three matches, she won three 6-1 sets and beat three top players, Maria Sharapova, Sabine Lisicki and Marion Bartoli all in straight sets. It is interesting to note that, at Wimbledon earlier this year, she lost to Marion Bartoli who lost to Sabine Lisicki who lost to Maria Sharapova. Hopefully we'll be seeing a match pitting Serena and Petra Kvitova in the near future.

Besides being surprising that Serena Williams actually won a non Major/YEC, (before Stanford, she hadn't won a non-Major/YEC since Charleston in 2008) it was surprising that Serena was able to win Stanford because it was only her third tournament since Wimbledon 2010. She showed much of the Serena who rose to the top of the women's game, and she will definitely be one of the favorites for the US Open in late August.

Watch out- Serena's back!

Some notes about her ranking: With this victory at Stanford, she will be back in the top 100. With a victory at either Rogers Cup or Cincinnati, she should be seeded for the US Open. Two more tournament wins before the US Open would get her into the top 20. At win at the US Open on top of that would get her into the top 10.

A preview of next week:
Next week, Andrea Petkovic will be ranked 10 in the world. (Stosur lost semifinal points at Stanford.)
The Mercury Insurance Open at San Diego will be next week. Read my preview here.

I will try to write more next week, but I may not have time as I will be watching a lot of tennis. I've also been swamped at work lately. That said, I will try to write about Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova next week, so stay tuned. Thanks for reading!
